IDEX have been spreading some festive cheer in December; they bought Christmas decorations for the Birmingham Children’s hospital and spent the afternoon decorating the ward. Natalie Parkinson from IDEX and Sharon Williams from the Birmingham Insurance Institute put on their creative hats in order to brighten up the ward windows for the poorly children who would be spending their Christmas inside.

Glittering icicle and snow flake garlands were hung from the ceilings and windows, whilst snowmen and snow topped trees created a magical winter wonderland for the Children to gaze at. IDEX wishes all the children, their families and not least the fantastic Staff at BCH a Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year.

IDEX were pleased to be the main sponsor at this year’s Annual Birmingham Insurance Institute Charity Lunch in September. All the proceeds went towards the Presidents chosen charity, the Birmingham Children’s Hospital that cares for over 250,000 sick children all over the UK.

It was a great event as always with lots of support from the local insurance industry. After a Bucks Fizz reception and a delightful 3 course luncheon, Dominic Hardisty from the Birmingham Children’s Hospital gave a very emotive speech. He described the fantastic care that the hospital provided for children with serious illnesses, including the support they give to their families. With the support of charities such as the BII they are able to provide research into the prevention and treatment of childhood diseases as well as vital equipment for their specialist units. IDEX would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended and made donations during the lunch, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

On the 4th November a group of amateur cyclists from the Birmingham Insurance Institute, (including the President of the BII, our one and only Matt Green) dusted off their bikes and set out on a challenging bike ride from Birmingham to London, over 140 miles. They battled through the wind and rain, up gentle slopes and hills that disappeared into the fog with one purpose in mind, to raise money for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital who care for over 250,000 sick children from all over the UK.

The courageous cyclists were greeted with Good Luck signs by the children of Tidbury Green nursery on their first day, then after an overnight stop off in Oxford and ice cold baths they continued the challenging journey into London to be welcomed at the finish line in Trafalgar Square. Despite falling off their bikes into hedges, punctures, sore bottoms and legs, the team of 6 are delighted to have raised over £5,500 which goes towards buying the best possible medical equipment and to pay for research into the prevention and treatment of childhood illnesses.

IDEX Move To Colmore Plaza

http://www.idexrecruitment.com/pages/news.aspx?ID=45

As of Friday 1st April 2011, Idex Recruitment will now be located in Colmore Plaza.

Due to the expansion of the company over the past 12 months, the old offices were getting a little cramped and therefore we needed to locate a new office space where the Idex team can continue to grow over the next few years. As our existing lease was up, it was the opportune time to move and after looking at many options in and around Birmingham City Centre we decided on Orega’s Colmore Plaza business centre.

Idex were the last company to move into Orega’s space in Colmore Plaza; making all 12,500 sq ft of their available office space now full and completing their first phase of occupancy.

Located on the mezzanine floor, we have access to a modern breakout area and our own meeting room in order to meet with our candidates and clients in a comfortable and confidential surrounding. We also have vast floor space in the new office and a lovely view over Colmore Circus (so plenty of pacing room and lots to look at whilst making all our important phone calls!)

All the Idex team are very happy with their new surroundings; after a few days of furniture shifting, we are all settled in and back to business as usual!

We are pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted for ‘Best Professional Services Recruitment Agency’ at the national Recruiter Awards 2011.

The awards are the recruitment industry’s annual event of the year with over 1000 people, representing some of the UK’s largest companies, attending in 2010. This year’s event is expected to be bigger and better as more than 300 entries will be examined by the judging panel that consists of some of the leading names in British recruitment.

The panel applies a rigorous assessment of each entry as agencies are measured against four key main criteria: Quality of Service; Innovation; Profitability and Financial Stability. They must also demonstrate ‘best practice’ as an employer.

Matt Green, Managing Director of IDEX, said “To be shortlisted at the biggest annual event in our industry is a great achievement. Winning this award will be a true testament to the hard work that each and every one of the IDEX team has put into our success. We have come a long way over a short period of time and we have been true to our values every step of the way. And now it’s all starting to pay off. Getting onto the shortlist is a great achievement in itself, we are all delighted.”

The awards will be presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on the 11th May.

IDEX Write Article for Financial Planner Magazine

http://www.idexrecruitment.com/pages/news.aspx?ID=43

Financial Planner Salaries and Careers

Talking to my colleagues recently I was pleased to hear that the activity on ‘the recruitment shop floor’ was high. It’s generally a reflection of a buoyant marketplace where it has an abundance of employment opportunities and an equal share of candidates looking to fill these positions. Within the recruitment industry it’s always wise not to take this positive news on face value. If you do, then expect to be ‘busy fools’.

With our experience we thought it was wise to dig deeper.

The team and I had a debate over a coffee and it was interesting to see that we had our own views regarding the current status of the adviser job market. Views that demonstrated that the industry is in a period of dramatic change and organisations are at different stages within this process.

Despite this we did reach a lot of common ground and here’s a snapshot of some of the major points.

RDR – Keeping us all very busy.

The political and economical landscape brings with it challenges that recruitment firms are certainly not immune to. Two or three years ago the recruitment market had to react to a deep recession, and although elements of this still exist today, our main activity seems to be generated with the rapid onset of the Retail Distribution Review (RDR).

There’s no doubt that the RDR will be a catalyst for dramatic change within the industry; changes that are now gaining momentum. This has created a challenging, yet exciting, recruitment environment in many ways.

There has been a marked increase in the number of candidates seeking re-employment mainly due to the activity of a shifting market. The number of advisers who are registered with us and are seeking employment is up to 30% from January 2010 to January 2011. The adviser role is not in isolation here. This increase comprises of paraplanners, administrators and support staff as practices look to re-position their businesses; banks look to review their current financial planning offerings; Networks look to exploit the opportunity to increase memberships; advisers look to develop exit strategies and national and larger Adviser practices are active within the mergers and acquisitions market.

Organisations have also increased their activity in the recruitment market for the very same reasons. The number of enquiries from employers in January of this year saw an increase of 40% compared to the same month in 2010.

So it has been lively to say the least.

A Talent Shortage

A change in the qualification structure is causing a reaction in the market. There has always been a marked difference between good advisers and very good advisers. It probably represented a 65/35 split and performance would have been the main differentiator between the two. Now the goal posts have moved as firms look for the very best in performance plus RDR readiness. The split now represents something similar to 80/20.

Talking to a HR Manager recently about their search criteria, she said, “We want RDR ready advisers who can hit the ground running with good business generation skills. This is very important to us.”

Whereas once advisers had to demonstrate good financial planning skills, it appears that proactive approach to business generation is becoming increasingly more important. This makes complete sense as organisations look to re-align their marketing strategies and budgets.

She went on to say, “We have gone through a process of client segmentation following a re-brand and identified a group that doesn’t fall into line with our ideals. Nevertheless, this group is large enough to generate new business opportunities. So a proactive individual with proven sales ability is highly desired. Gone are the days where a regular stream of leads are coming in from the Marketing Department!”

Therefore, recruiting firms are seeking ‘RDR ready’ advisers with a client bank and the hunger and drive to develop new business opportunities. And interestingly, those who aren’t actively recruiting are also scouting for the same individuals as they ‘window shop’ in the market to see what’s available. This may explain the activity levels in our office.

So, welcome to the battleground; fighting over the lesser few as those who fit into the new criteria become the minority within the market. This inevitably puts the ‘RDR ready’ advisers in a favourable position and, as a consequence, salaries and packages have held up quite nicely.

The average ‘RDR ready’ adviser will be looking to receive an average salary in the region of £45,000-£60,000, taking into account regional variances.

Additionally, we have also seen a change in recruitment processes as a more rigorous approach is adopted. The ‘RDR ready’ adviser can also be selective. Therefore, this knock-on effect has increased the timescales from application to acceptance. This just highlights the risk averse environment we are currently in.

Consider also the increase of counter offers ensuring that firms retain their best advisers, a reluctance to move due to the recession, tighter contracts including equity tie-ins and the “I’m comfortable where I am, thanks” factor and you can understand why supply and demand is ensuring salaries, at the very least, are maintaining their levels.

At this point maybe spare a thought for the recruitment industry where more and more firms are chasing fewer and fewer candidates.

Competition is fierce on both sides of the fence!

Where does that leave non-‘RDR ready’ advisers?

There’s activity and this is positive. And activity can equal opportunity.

There’s a common consensus that the RDR will create a big shift towards the wealthier client. This could mean that large sections of adviser client banks could go un-serviced.

Additionally, with grandfathering currently getting a ‘thumbs down’ from the FSA, some advisers may be looking to exit the market. We’ve seen the figures bandied around highlighting a reduction in the adviser market of around 30%. This will create a bigger pool of clients and servicing opportunities.

So there is a lot to go at. And there are organisations in the market looking to exploit these opportunities.

These organisations are willing to spend time, money and resource ensuring that their current advisers are ‘RDR Ready’. And, as the opportunities materialise, they are looking to employ additional advisers. This is most definitely true for larger firms who can bear the cost of this exercise. But remember, this additional outlay needs to be balanced out.

The existence of a source of good leads would certainly appeal to advisers. It’s part of our internal process to understand the main desirables that the candidate is looking for and in our opinion this is very high up on the list. With equity stakes being offered only to the very best, it would appear that the ability to have an existing source of leads for client acquisition holds a greater weighting.

In fact a survey completed at the end of 2010 for FT Adviser highlights the growing unpopularity of share options. Only 13 percent receive them compared to 21 percent in 2007, with 21 percent of advisers saying that a prospective employer could tempt them with shares, down from 28 percent in 2007.

But again, there is generally a cost to lead generation and this outlay will almost certainly be factored into salary scales.

So the employment opportunities do exist. But it’s worth noting that a move towards a more professional landscape through qualifications coupled with the cost of lead generation has driven salaries down for this particular group.

Recent figures highlight a decrease in salaries of roughly 20% since 2009.

Talking to an MD of a practice recently, he mentioned that they have reviewed their adviser salary structure and reduced all bands by around 10% for new advisers joining the firm. Even his current advisers have seen a reduction of 14% in their bonus.

A lot of candidates are not willing to accept this and come with high expectations born from an era when RDR was just a mere cell of a thought in someone’s mind. Unless they fulfil our clients’ ideal criteria, then we are finding it extremely difficult to place these individuals in positions that fulfil their expectations.

Newcomers, where?

As the RDR gains momentum over the coming months there’s no doubt that the financial industry will be on the media radar. The portrayal of increased professionalism and trust will connect on several levels. Hopefully this will lead to more financial planning clients and put the profession on the student map.

This move will certainly aid recruitment.

Currently the profession doesn’t really appear on the radar when university students think about their careers. Changing perceptions could prove positive and we may see an increasing number of graduates considering a move into the advisory arena.

The onset of IFA academies demonstrates a willingness to bring through new talent into the industry, but this only scratches the surface of what could be achieved. And initially, prospective entrants will probably have to fund their own development to create a chance of joining the profession as an adviser. But that’s for another time.

In relation to IFA academies, I recall a conversation that I had with an old friend of mine a couple of years ago.

He was quite clear in his views when it came to the sort of financial planner he would like deal with, “Anyone who hasn’t gone through the same life experiences as I have is not qualified, in my book, to advise me on my key financial decisions.”

He went on to say, “Imagine the conversations about mortgages, protection, pensions and investments when the person you are talking to hasn’t even reached the stage where they are considering these products themselves?”.

This may have been true in the past when people served an apprenticeship, maybe through the banks, or stumbled into the industry via a career change. At this point in their careers they were considered to be at an age to have ‘been there, seen and done that!’ This probably won’t be the case in the future as a new generation of clients filter through who hold the profession in a higher esteem.

So there are many opportunities across all spectrums of the adviser recruitment market:

‘RDR ready’ advisers who can tick the boxes in qualifications, business generation skills and a healthy bank of clients are in high demand.

Businesses who are reviewing their models and strategies pre-RDR are looking for additional resource to service new and existing clients.

Increased professionalism and the positive message that this brings will provide the foundation to increase the flow of new entrants into the industry.

Exciting times are ahead and there’s one thing we all definitely agreed on over of our coffee.....on the ‘recruitment shop floor’ we will continue with the high activity levels, but ‘busy fools’...we are definitely not!

IDEX Visit Warwick Castle For Christmas!

On Thursday 23rd December 2010, the Idex team celebrated the end of a spectacular year (and of course Christmas) by attending a Medieval Banquet at Warwick Castle.

The whole team got into the spirit of the event by donning medieval costumes, from queens and princesses to knights in shining armour…and a random wizard thrown in for good measure!

We all managed to brave a dicey walk in the snow (with a few of the team taking a detour round the gorgeous castle grounds after accidentally gate-crashing the wrong party…) and found ourselves in one of the castle’s lavish halls to enjoy a evening of fine wine and fabulous food. Entertainment was provided by the main speaker of the house and his jester who impressed with his magic tricks.

After a lovely dinner, plenty of drinks and a heart-felt group rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”; the DJ took over and the braver members of the team threw some serious shapes on the floor – the others deciding to make friends with the bar staff.

Like all good things, the evening had to end and the team departed in the early hours. A great night was had by all and it was a fitting celebration to mark a brilliant year for the team.

Concerns over Lord Justice Jacksons Civil Litigation Review

There has been expressed concerns over recommendations made in the Civil Litigation Review published at the beginning of the year.

Recommendations to abolish the recovery of success fees and ATE Premiums have not gone down well within the Legal and Claims Management Sectors. Law Firms have spoken out saying that these new recommendations could restrict access to justice.

These recommendations if taken on board could affect organisations who rely on fees generated from referring Personal Injury Claims to Legal Firms. However some Insurers view the recommendations as a positive step and suggest that it will help cut costs of litigation and deter claimants with embellished and fraudulent claims.

Each year the Birmingham Insurance Institute hosts a charity lunch for Birmingham’s insurance professionals. This year the lunch took place in October at the Birmingham Hippodrome in honour of the Gurka Welfare Trust. As active members of the Birmingham Insurance Institute, a number of the IDEX team attended the event.

Following an excellent lunch, the guest speaker Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Strickland MBE, Commander of the 1st Batallion, Royal Gurkha Rifles, captivated his audience with tales of supreme bravery of the Gurka soldiers, leaving the whole room humbled by their efforts. The total raised for the day was over £2000.

The IDEX team was photographed for the Birmingham post with Sue Glynn, former President of the BII. As the Education Secretary of the Birmingham Insurance Institute, Matt Green actively encourages new members to enjoy the social and educational benefits it has to offer. The events provide the opportunity for like-minded members of the insurance community to socialise and strengthen relationships.

IDEX Christmas Celebration at the Darts

On Wednesday night the Birmingham team invited a few good friends of the business to celebrate Christmas early at the Grand Slam of darts at the Wolverhampton Civic. This was a thank you to the continued support these individuals, from both General Insurance and Financial Services, have given IDEX.

Everyone threw themselves into the spirit of the occasion, some members bringing along mascots in the form of Zippy and the Australian flag, which even made an appearance on the televised coverage on ITV4!

The evening climaxed in an unexpected comeback by the Australian Simon Whitlock against Ted Hankey, who turned round a 2-4 start to win 5-4, much to the delight of our resident Aussie, Michelle Sharman.

A few more drinks followed in one of Wolverhampton’s night spots and over all a good night was had by all (perhaps a little too good for some!).

This will enable many more candidates and clients alike to visit our consultants with ease, whether it be in our designated meeting room, or in one of the many coffee shops or bars Birmingham has to offer. Of course this also puts IDEX in close proximity to many insurance organisations, so we can maintain a closer relationship with our valued clients.

This is a great step forward for IDEX and will no doubt have a positive impact on our General Insurance and Financial Services recruitment in Birmingham. We also like to think we are doing our bit to help maintain the hospitality industry in Birmingham!
